Who We Are

At Ek Prayaas, we are on a mission to transform the lives of underprivileged children in Kolkata.

Registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act, we are a non-profit institution that works tirelessly to provide every child with equal education, nurturing both their minds and their hearts. Our school provides quality education along with nutritious meals, and opportunities for students to explore athletics and the arts.

By empowering young learners with knowledge and skills, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and inspire a new generation of self-reliant, compassionate, and innovative leaders who will contribute positively to their communities.

Founded with 12 children

Shifted to a larger facility to accommodate growth

Introduced Smart Class technology and computer training

Celebrated 10 years, with student strength reaching 175

Hosted Kolkata’s first-ever inter-NGO sports meet

Transitioned into an online school, achieving over 80% student attendance and 100% teacher participation

Marked 20 years with a special tree plantation drive

In September 2004, what started as a disparate group of 12 children taught by two adults who had a dream is today Ek Prayaas.

The school houses the entire primary section from Lower Nursery to Class 5. Ek Prayaas has achieved full attendance of learners from underprivileged homes in the primary section. There are about 200 children in the age group of 4 -14 years, belonging to the surrounding slum areas. Learning materials have been analysed and put in place as per skill requirements of each age group.

Our Story

What began as an attempt to raise consciousness and quality of life for the marginalized and underprivileged children through equitable education, has, in over 20 years grown into a thriving non-profit school, having more than 200 students across various elementary/primary grade levels.

Ek Prayaas is a Non-Profit Organization registered under The West Bengal Society’s Act. Alongside academics, the school also focuses on extracurricular activities namely; computers, creative arts, dance, theatre, community work, and social skills training. With a monthly income of less than Rs. 6000, families of our students pay the school fees of Rs. 90 per month to educate their children in our school.

Our Prayaas

Ek Prayaas is an effort to provide a platform for learning to the underprivileged children of Kolkata. We aim to contribute towards the upliftment of their lives irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

It aims towards building a society based on legitimate rights, equality, justice, honesty, social sensitivity and a culture of service in which all are self-reliant. Ek Prayaas aims to develop a pedagogy that includes both academic and vocational learning.

Our Mission

For the last 2 decades now, we have provided quality elementary and primary education to children from economically challenged families in Kolkata, empowering more than 200 students from Lower Nursery to Grade 5.
As a school committed to transforming lives through learning, we focus on supporting first-generation learners from the surrounding slums, whose parents fall in the lowest income brackets and not be able to afford high education fees. This we do through education and advocacy at all levels.

Guided by our motto, “Empower Through Learning,” we aim to break the cycle of poverty by nurturing self-dependent, educated youth of tomorrow.

Our vision is to create a supportive environment for underprivileged children, by promoting education and empowerment. We are dedicated to making these young learners independent and job-ready, with a focus on nurturing their potential through access to quality education and skill-building opportunities. By striving to find the right placement in institutions for higher education, we want to enable enthusiastic learners reach their full potential and build a better future for themselves and their communities in India. We strive to serve all our beneficiaries with fairness, dignity, and inclusivity, working to minimize stigma and foster educational equality.

Ek Prayaas collaborates with private and non-profit schools to promote partnerships and create student opportunities to bridge the gap of access.
